230 V TRIAC dimmer – choice and compatibility
In the 230V TRIAC dimming category, you can find a suitable solution based on the application, technical requirements and installation method. The guidance below will help you compare products before ordering.
How does TRIAC dimming work?
TRIAC dimming is phase-angle control, which changes the power delivered to a compatible load connected to the mains supply. The LED luminaire or power supply must support this dimming method. A product stated to be dimmable will not necessarily work with every dimmer, so the manufacturers' compatibility information takes priority.
Leading-edge and trailing-edge control
When choosing a phase-angle dimmer, it is important to know whether the load supports leading-edge control, trailing-edge control or both. LED power supplies can behave differently with different dimmers. The wrong combination can cause flickering, humming, a narrow dimming range, or the light not switching off as expected.
Minimum load and load sizing
Check the permitted power range stated for LED loads on the dimmer. The low load of LED lights may fall below the minimum load of an older dimmer. In a system with several luminaires, take into account the total combined load and the limitations stated by the manufacturer, not just the dimmer's maximum wattage.
TRIAC, PUSH DIM and DALI
TRIAC controls a compatible mains supply, PUSH DIM uses push-button control in a device that supports it, and DALI is a digital lighting control system. They are not directly interchangeable. With LED strips, you choose either a suitable dimmable power supply or an LED controller, depending on the system.
Installation and commissioning
Before installation, check the wiring requirements, whether a neutral conductor is needed, the suitability of the push buttons and the compatible loads. Adjusting the minimum and maximum dimming levels can improve operation if the device supports it. Fixed 230 V electrical installation must be carried out by a qualified electrical professional.
Compatible products and accessories
Always check the compatibility of the selected product and its accessories from the model-specific product information. Also have a look at the following categories:
Frequently asked questions
Can an ordinary LED power supply be dimmed with TRIAC?
Only if the power supply is expressly designed for TRIAC dimming.
Why does an LED light flicker when dimmed?
The cause may be an incompatible dimming method, too small a load or the dimmer's control range.
Is PUSH DIM the same as TRIAC?
No. They are different control methods, although some products may support more than one.
Can I install a dimmer myself?
Fixed 230 V electrical installations are a job for an electrical professional.
