Choosing a recessed LED downlight for the bathroom
The guide below helps you compare product features and avoid the most common selection mistakes.
IP rating and installation location in wet areas
In bathroom electrical installations, the location of the luminaire affects the required level of protection and the installation method. IP44 may be suitable for some installation locations, but it does not automatically mean suitability everywhere near the shower. Check the wet area zones, the applicable installation requirements and the manufacturer's instructions.
Cut-out, installation depth and insulation
When choosing a recessed downlight, it is important to check the diameter of the installation hole and the depth required by the luminaire. The driver, cabling and any safety clearances to insulation also affect the installation. Do not judge insulation suitability from the appearance of the luminaire: check the installation restrictions stated by the manufacturer.
Amount of light and placement
A bathroom usually needs both sufficient general lighting and effective mirror lighting. The number of luminaires depends on the size of the room, the surfaces, the luminous output and the beam angle. Plan the layout so that strong shadows are not cast on the face and the luminaires do not cause glare through the mirror.
Colour temperature and dimming
3000 K creates a warmer atmosphere, while 4000 K gives a more neutral impression. Dimming can make it easier to adapt the lighting to different situations. Make sure that the luminaire, driver and dimmer support the same control method. Fixed electrical installations must be carried out by a qualified electrical professional.

Frequently asked questions
Is IP44 enough above the shower?
This cannot be determined from the IP44 marking alone. The zone of the installation location and the product's approval are what matter.
Can a downlight be installed close to insulation?
Only if the manufacturer's installation instructions allow it and the safety clearances are met.
Is a separate mirror light needed?
It often improves the lighting on the face and reduces shadows from above.
Who installs a bathroom downlight?
Fixed electrical installations are the job of a qualified electrical professional.
